Consent letter for a child travelling abroad – free template (UK)

If a child travels abroad with only one parent or with another adult, carry a signed consent letter from the parent(s) with parental responsibility who are not travelling, with their contact details. If surnames differ, also take a birth or adoption certificate. Taking a child out of the UK without the consent of everyone with parental responsibility, or a court order, can be a criminal offence.

Legal basis: Child Abduction Act 1984, s. 1; Children Act 1989, s. 13; GOV.UK "Get permission to take a child abroad" · Legal position: October 2026

Attach a copy of your passport. If the child's surname differs from the travelling adult's, take the birth or adoption certificate. Some countries ask for a certified (notarised) letter; check the entry rules on GOV.UK foreign travel advice.
